Officers of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), are trained to respond in a crisis situation.

CIT officers (Crisis Intervention Team) are officers of the police who have been trained to respond to mental-health crises. They are trained to respond to mental health crises and de-escalate situations without resorting to force. The training is based on five objectives: reducing injuries to officers and the person in crisis, promoting decriminalization of persons with mental illnesses, reducing stigma associated with mental disorders, and using a team approach to crisis intervention.

They are also qualified to give de-escalation training

Specialized training is provided to Cit officers in order to manage potentially dangerous situations. This training uses a scenario-based approach that teaches how to intervene effectively and safely. Officers can complete several scenarios without ever leaving the classroom. After completing the scenarios, officers receive feedback from trained mental health professionals and seasoned CIT officers.

They are also trained in mental health and first aid.

An important step towards responding to and preventing mental health crises is having a Cit officer undergo mental health first-aid training. This program is modeled after nationally recognized Crisis Intervention Team training. The goal is to help first responders recognize signs and treat mental illness. It improves first responders’ understanding of the mental illness system and fosters communities. This training also helps to reduce the incidence of mental health crisis injuries and arrests.

They participate role playing exercises

CIT officers are required to undergo intensive training to handle crisis situations. Training includes role-playing exercises as well as advanced communication techniques. They also have the chance to talk with families and people with mental illness during the training. They will also learn de-escalation skills through the exercises.

They devise new curricula

CIT Program manager is offering an eight-hour training course in Mental Health First Aid to all public safety and fire/EMS users. So far, four trainings were offered and all of them have been well received.

They also help prevent violence and trauma. CIT officers are often faced with difficult situations and need to use all of their practical and emotional resources to make a difference. CIT officers need the support of their communities and agencies to stay afloat in these difficult situations.
